TheWorst Horse.Net: The Pop-/Sub-/Dharma-culture site

Thanks for doin' what you're doin'. I'm happy to finally have a place to go to where I can feel a bit less schizophrenic about a cultural consciousness happily shaped by punk rock, skating, pop-culture, lowbrow art, etc, and sangha practice.
El Pinablo, MySpace friend of The Worst Horse

Not sure if I fit your demographic [am 55] but I am fascinated by your site. You all do a wonderful job! Very impressive. TheWorstHorse just captures everything current about Buddhism. What a gift!
Reader David O.

Have you heard of the web site TheWorstHorse.net ? No? Well, if you're not a Buddhist, then that's to be expected. But, even if you're not a Buddhist, "The Horse" is interesting and unique. The site's tagline is "Pop- and sub-culture for dharma people. Dharma for pop- and sub-culture people." In short, the site recognizes the fact that dharma practitioners come from all walks of life (like, for example, the Dharma Punx) and that those Americans who embrace Buddhism aren't necessarily monks, hippies, or dry university intellectualists.

A great site that highlights the different incarnations of Buddhism in our post-modern, pop-culture... an example of pop culture at its best.

I checked out The Worst Horse a few weeks ago and it changed my life. I have a reading addiction and too much of it is satisfied through reading about the war and uck . .  I'm too informed. . . and theworsthorse gives me something happy to read at work when I'm fucking around. Thanks,

I stumbled across the site a few weeks ago and am still feeling really refreshed by reading through all your ideas/articles/stuff etc... Of course, I do realise that I'm probably one of the only bhikkhus to have made it here ( I'll do my best to get the word out) but I definitely appreciate your spin on it all - 84,000 Dharma gates and you guys certainly seem to have most of them covered ... please keep up the great work! Sadhu!

There's no shortage of Buddhist websites these days -- see our links for evidence -- but few are as entertaining and wide-ranging as theworsthorse.net, edited by my friend Rod Meade Sperry. Taking pop-culture and sub-culture as its starting points, TWH covers a lot of ground. The feature articles exhibit the strength of the site: an unfailing ability to get to the salient dharmic core of the many shapes Buddhism is taking in modern culture. Generally, this is accomplished with humor, sensitivity, and intelligence. The reader participation is impressive -- don't miss "Body Vows," the collection of tattoos submitted by practitioners, with their stories -- and a feeling of community permeates the site, without social networking being the thrust of the whole thing. There's also a massive array of links to a whole lot of creative people out there interpreting the dharma, categorized clearly with capsule descriptions and commentary, a rare joy to browse through. TWH dwells in the joy and pain of the evolving Western dharma, without judgment.

What a terrific site!  I've fallen completely in love.  I just moved to the Massachusetts countryside from SF, and it's sweet to have a little reconnection with some of the sub-culture worlds I left behind. I'm filled with glee at how much more of it I still have to explore.

I've got a serious problem with The Worst Horse: I spend too much time reading it when I have other work to do. There are more interesting and funny things on this site than most other media sites I know, and it is certainly as rich a site as there is in the Buddhist world. I learn a lot, and it stretches my mind.
James Gimian, publisher of Shambhala Sun

howdy-
the worst horse rocks in so many ways, and totally jibes with my attaining to buddhist nature. the site is clever, but also thoughtful in a way too many sites just ain't, even if they're well written. Congrats! And in this impermanent world. . . PLEASE keep it up!

A very eclectic site of Buddhist links, writings, videos, audio, songs and, well, stuff. Includes things like links to gay and lebsian Buddhist groups, punk rock, blogs, comedy, Buddhist tattoos, hip-hop and surfing and skateboarding. A very large and fun site.

Maybe the coolest site yet is The Worst Horse. They tout their offering as "pop- and sub-culture for dharma people; dharma for pop- and sub-culture people." If you can't dig that, you've sauntered into the wrong saloon.

Web Site of the Issue (Winter 2006/2007). . .Our favorite for those times when we're lonely, bored, shiftless, directionless, vapid, hopeless, friendless and in need of inspiration. As Chogyam Trungpa put it: "When East meets West, the sparks will fly."

I e-mailed my teacher the URL for your site and plan to get it out to the sangha when I see them on Sunday. Your site is great. Keep it up. I love finally having a site with topics for us younger "modern" Buddhists.

Now that's an interesting site! I love it.
Stuart Carduner, AshokaEdu.net

With its admitted pop and subculture leanings, The Worst Horse is a site attractive to both the Buddhism-curious and the hip Buddhist. It features original articles that focus on Buddhist artists, musicians, and merchandise; an up-to-date Buddhist news section; an extensive section of links (some of them unusual); and a message board. The site's names is a reference to a quote by Shunyru Suzuki Roshi about four horses that have varying sensitivity to the handler's whip. The metaphor reveals that the "worst" horse is in fact the best, because as Suzuki Roshi explains, "In your very imperfections you will find the basis for your firm, way-seeking mind." This untraditional Buddhist website is one worth visiting.

Thanks to Buddhadharma magazine for their mention of The Worst Horse. This site provides information, articles and links geared towards "Pop and sub-culture for Dharma people and Dharma for pop and sub-culture people". Miso, the meistro of Big Red Buddha is interviewed in the latest addition to the Buddhist ezine The Worst Horse. It's a terrific interview, titled "Buddhism gets its Onion," that is clever and funny as hell. Plus, you find out a lot about Miso, but not more than he'll allow. A good job of interviewing is done by the even-more-mysterious-than-Miso webmeister of the worst horse. Good stuff, y'all.

[review:] pop culture and mayhem for Buddhists. The links section covers literature, music, art, tattoos, GLBT sites, comix, and a whole lot more. There's a whole mess of Buddhist-related popular culture news coverage, some of which barely counts as news (which they admit). There's lots of good stuff, so check it out.
